About Us

The story of the great Buffalo Lick has been steeped in legend and adventure ever since the naturalist William Bartram wrote ✍🏼 about his mysterious experience there in the late 1700s. While on a survey expedition ⛵ , Bartram's party encountered wild magnetic anomalies at the Great Buffalo Lick that disrupted their compass 🧭 readings. These erroneous compass readings almost caused the failure ❌of the entire expedition . After being set straight by the group of native American guides the surveyors were able to complete the mission, using the great Buffalo Lick as an important landmark. Bartram described the landmark as located near the head of the Ogeechee River, a large mineral deposit of sweet-tasting earth 🌍where the buffalo had licked huge holes in the ground.

Legend has it that gold was hidden 🗺️at the site at the end of the Civil War. Gold that was never located. The buffalo are long gone from Georgia, with their disappearance the mineral licks were unused and the exact site of the Great Buffalo Lick was lost to history. Our first plot of land sits on the banks of the north fork of the Ogeechee River, close to a historical marker that is one of 4 locations claiming to be Bartram's famous site. We like to think we are fellow travelers of Bartram's, Naturalists with a love 🩷 of the flora and fauna of the Great Buffalo🦬 Lick area, adventurers exploring all that life has to offer, and along the way perhaps our bees🐝 are finding a little bit of that lost gold.
